A few days ago, I was surprised to see that, according to Google Webmaster Tools, a lot of the pages on several of my sites were marked as "Not Selected" for indexing. Usually, that would indicate duplicate content, or that there are multiple URLs that can be used to access the same pages on your...

Browser & Screen Resolution Trends
by ZetaGecko | Internet, Web Design
I just checked the browser and screen resolution stats for www.geckotribe.com and wow, what a surprise!
Firefox is wiping the floor with IE on that domain! One of my other heavily trafficed domains reverses the picture, but another looks almost exactly the same as this.
As recently as January, I was still getting enough visito...

A little over a year and a half ago, when John Reese announced his BlogRush service, I thought "oh, c**p," (that word isn't "CaRP" :-) "one of the big boys beat me to my idea." At the time, I'd begun working on a site that was going to be similar, but with a few key...

Yesterday I started a new blog on a domain I'd been using mostly to redirect traffic to other sites. The domain name is "ToSeeMore.info". The blog directory is "about". It's on a subdomain named "click". So the URLs to the blog posts and categories end up looking like this:
http://click.ToSeeMore.info/about/how-i-got-319713-organic-google-clicks-in-a-month/
http://click.ToSeeMore.info/about/-/getting-web-traffic/
I called it "uber-optimized",...

Google Authority Listing For GeckoTribe.com
by ZetaGecko | Gecko Tribe, SEO
I happened to notice this morning that GeckoTribe.com has gotten an "authority listing" from Google for the search terms (don't be too shocked) "gecko tribe". I'm not bragging -- it's not like those are very common search terms. But it's nice to see.

You'll notice I kept the AdWords ads in th...

Google Penalty Removed From FastJV.com
by ZetaGecko | Gecko Tribe, SEO
Last June, I launched a product named Fast JV. Until a day or two ago, it had never shown up in Google.
My first thought way back when was that it had simply been sandboxed, but when I registered it in Google's Webmaster Tools, they said that no pages from the site appeared in their...

I've noticed over the last few days that one of my sites has been getting hundreds of hits a day from people searching for "katharine mcphee yellow dress". I don't have a site about American Idol, and I've never even typed the words "katharine mcphee" (and the first time I'd even copied and pasted the...

CSS Trappist Monastery gets more designs, tons of traffic
by ZetaGecko | CSS
The CSS Trappist Monastery got a few more design submissions yesterday, along with a boat load (think Titanic, but hold the iceberg!) of traffic after it got blogged over at MetaFilter. To those who questioned the seriousness of the site in the comments there, yes, it's completely serious. To those who commented on the crappy...

Streamlining the checkout process
by ZetaGecko | Marketing, Web Design
A while back, I overhauled my shopping cart system so that it guided the user through the process better. I'll admit that I didn't bother tracking the difference that it made, but my general impression was that the change was for the better. Today, I realized that I could streamline the checkout process further, and...

We all know that getting lots of inbound links is a critical part of search engine optimization. And most of us know that joining link farms, which create lots of links between totally unrelated sites, is not a good way to do it, because if Google catches you at it, they'll penalize you. So how...
